I had the idea of compiling a cryptic crossword on the subject of - who'd have guessed? - food and drink. This might be a touch over-ambitious, but let's test the water with one cautious webbed foot. I'll see what the interest and enthusiasm levels are like. Here's a solitary clue to get us started.

Mad bad duckling swallows head of penguin - bloody mess! (12 letters, two words)

Classic33, I would like you to participate for the two of us here. A small favour considering all we've been through, Guinness, Alligators and all.

As I suspected, we are not overwhelmed by entries. Nevertheless, I'll keep it going for a while with a couple of short clues.

Head of state in country gets spicy snack (6)
    Chicken wearing headgear? (5)

One of my favourite snacks and they can, of course be vegetarian.

I saw these a lot in France. We don't seem to get them much here.

Look at the clue about chicken wearing head gear. You might be looking for a type of chicken. :whistling: Think of a phrase that means wearing headgear. I don't think I will ever make the jump from chicken wearing headgear to
    Bantam
. And I only know about
    Bantams
because a friend used to have them.

No its not bantam! Its another type of chicken (not a breed). Go back to my song example...
