My first clue was: 'Put cake mix with the last of the bread for a quacking good starter!'

The word 'mix' indicates an anagram. In this case it is an anagram of 'Put cake'. The phrase 'the last of' indicates the last letter of the following word (in this case 'bread' so the letter 'd'). The phrase 'for a quacking good starter' indicates the definition of the solution: a starter with maybe something to do with ducks! So in this case its an anagram of 'put cake and the letter 'd'. Re-arrange these letters and you get duck pate.
