Homemade Grill

Does anyone have any experience making a homemade grill? I have a survival bag that I did not want to clutter with a portable grill & I was under the impression I could construct my own. I had some success with aluminum cans & a grill grate but it was very crude at best.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
