I’m planning to surprise my girlfriend abroad with some home cooked meals when I visit her, and I just don’t know how to use one of those electric stoves. When she first invited me to her home after the Asian dating social we attended, I noticed that she uses an electric stove rather than the usual one that uses gas. I was planning on surprising her by cooking her breakfast in the morning but I’m kind of skeptical with my cooking abilities when using an electric one. Need some help!

If you could tell me what your controls show, then I can help. Some controls have the words LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH, etc right on them, without numbers. Mine looks something like this:

  • LO is a very low setting, equal to a barely-lit low flame. I can't recall ever using this low a setting.
  • I usually simmer things - like rice that I'm cooking - between 2 and 3.
  • between 5 to 6 is a medium setting; this is where I do most of my cooking
  • A medium-high would be something like a 7 on this dial
  • HI is a high setting. This is what I use to bring things to a boil
So, if you'd normally turn the knob on a gas stove halfway, you'd set the knob between 5 and 6 on an electric stove.
