The General Chat Thread (2016-2022)

I made 5 years in last Thursday (12th October) as well.

Is this the place for general, non food related topics? Nothing political or controversial.
Yes. Anything non-food related can go into "The Cafe" forum. This thread is just general chit chat that doesn't warrant a thread of its own (or in most cases a reply :D). I am considering a politics area but need enough interest in it first. Political forums areas tend to be high maintenance because conversions can get very heated in there and I don't want to be spending all my time sorting out arguments between members!

 is right! Just saw our first Christmas commercial on the TV last night. Currently composing my list of businesses to boycott until next year...
Yeh... M&S sent me a "the Christmas shop is now open" email over the weekend. I wasn't impressed!

Oh Dear, you're right. And Christmas is a serious thing. It could be a "discreto" moment- sorry I don't remember how to say this in English - full of respect and silence and semplicity (well, not only on Christmas time)..
Discrete is most likely the direct translation. Solemn is possibly what you are looking for.
I like Christmas - I HATE the commercialism [and often pure cynicism] that now surrounds it
I was born over the Christmas period (and also made the mistake of being married during the same period). It's really hard keeping it all seperate. I've actually given up on my birthday during that period and now celebrate my 'half-birthday' 6 months later when I can actually appreciate it!

They could have been on the 29th February!!

I do know someone who's birthday is the 29th February! She has great fun telling people she had her first child when she was 12... It gets worse than that because she actually have birth to get first child (first pregnancy) 2 weeks before her 49th birthday. (it was an accident, not planned pregnancy).

I've had one of those weekends with my husband.

First he asked me to teach him how to use the pressure cooker...

Next we had a conversation regarding a medical appointment (physiologist) which he has written down on the calendar as 15:15. Now I naturally took this to mean 3:15pm. Nope, it doesn't. Apparently my physiology appointment is actually at 09:00 that day. I'm left wondering which one of us needs this appointment. I've also had to make the request that
  • 0=0
  • 1=1
  • 2=2
  • 3=3
  • ....
  • 9=9
For the remainder of our lives. It would make them that little bit easier. I've now had to cancel the person coming to take me to the appointment which also means I don't get the house cleaned this week either because she won't clean the house if no-one is home. (this is a free service I'm entitled to after my stay in hospital whereby they'll help out for 6 weeks with transport and domestic help).

Re: politics area. I suggest you take a poll. I don't know how others feel, but CB is my little refuge, a place to talk food and fun, when the "real world" intrudes. Also, it's impossible to convey nuances or tone in a written form, so posts can be read or misread in many ways. I'm afraid that politics might muddy the waters around here.

Re: Christmas birthday. Our kids were born on December 29th. Nice for the tax claim for that year, but they really weren't due to show up until February 20th. That would have made for a better birthday. We ended up doing the half-birthday thing for them often when they were in grade school, so that they could all play outside.

We are discussing politics already in some threads - any posts to do with farming practices, genetic crops, food labelling, the effect of Brexit on food supplies etc are inevitably political in nature. Food and politics are inextricably mixed and we would be naive to think they weren't.

As for off-topic wider political issues, I doubt we have enough members to support it - I tend to agree about the ambiguity of text in that content.

There's already been one promoting the EDL by the back door. I disagreed then and still do.

As for politics being the main driving force behind farming practices, GM or organic food, you'd be wrong to believe that. Big money will always drive research to prove what the supplier wants to.

Think Monsato/Monasato in the US. You buy your seed from them, you can't reuse any left over, or even give it away. Do that and you go without. Three companies control the grain/seed market in North America.

Closer to home, Paraquat is still being manufactured for use.

So is arsenic. But to put all blame for everything on 'the big boys' is faintly ridiculous. We live in a heavily populated world and it needs food - lots of affordable food, To suggest that we return to the days of one man one cow is to condemn a huge slice of the population to death. No, things are not perfect but to pretend we don't need modern industrialized farming and all that it entails is simply hiding from the truth.
As for politics - the only people to REALLY benefit from politics are politicians. For the rest of us peasants it's pretty much as it was in medieval times - different colour flower on top but the roots are still in the poop.

Point is unless you read the small print, you'll never see paraquat mentioned it. Company has stuck another name on it. Their trade name.

Arsenic you can make yourself, fairly easily. How much do you need & how pure

Woke to find it was 1C this morning instead of the forecast 8C. The fire wasn't lit because it was so warm yesterday and forecast warm overnight, plus we are expecting 27C for the rest of the week with 28C on Friday...

I lit the fire after sitting the windows we had left open. I could see the frost in the bottom field! I could also see the wombat in the bottom field... No wild bore today though.

2nd egg today, 2nd double yolker!
