Tomorrow you are only allowed one food ingredient

A completely silly question: tomorrow you can only eat one food ingredient but you can eat as much of it as you like. Fire and water is permitted for cooking - so the ingredient can be eaten raw, baked, boiled, steamed, smoked or any other technique you can think of using fire and/or water. The food has to be a basic ingredient (not bread, for example). What would you choose? For me its easy!
 
Jacket potatoes (assuming I can have salt). Butter would be nice also but I could manage without.
 
I'm with @Cookie on this given that bread has been ruled out (which is unfair since it is water, yeast and wheat flour in its basic form).... and I could easily live off some of the wonderful breads I have had on my travels. So it would be (brown/wholegrain) rice or (red) potatoes. There are so many ways I can cook potatoes... rice or potatoes. I could also actually go with besan flour as well. Or even chickpeas (though I would prefer black chickpeas, they are so much nicer)... and make my own flour or have them roasted or whole, boiled or mashed...
Anyone of those I could live off for weeks on end. I wouldn't do eggs simply because of their need for a tad of salt to bring out their flavour and their complete lack of fibre!

I remember "bonfire nights" (5th November) in the 50's when we built the bonfire in the street and cooked jacket potatoes in the embers. Retrieved them after an hour or two, dust off the ash and add a little salt.

That all stopped when some do-gooding council decided to lay black top over the cobbles.

That did virtually eliminate the teeth chattering when riding the bicycle though.
 
My Mom would tell me about how all the kids in the family would toss potatoes into the fire my grandma would start when she cleaned out the chicken coop. Um, Mom? Did you guys wrap tin foil around them? :unsure: "No, dear". :eek: Not sure I would want one of those potatoes with the extra "seasonings".

There was no tin foil in the 50's Lynne. Not in Yorkshire anyway.

[And, of course we ate the skin]

charcoal is charcoal whatever its source... and I burn the wood shavings and chick poop here.. yet to cook potatoes on it, but you have given me an idea for later in the week when we have jacket potatoes... :whistling:
