A bit of history ..

Saint Valentine´s is based on the ancient historical San Valentino, a Professor who believed that all Military Personnel should marry, which is not what the Roman Military dictated. He was jailed for quite some time prior to his execution, for giving marital ceremonies
to single Military Soldiers and their loved ones.

He also was the mentor and friend to the blind daughter of an official who asked him, to provide lessions for his daughter, and she received for lessons and highly respected his teachings during his imprisonment.

To move ahead, Valentine´s Day is exactly 3 weeks away .. Any plans ?

My husband and I are talking about this .. We plan a tiny 3 day 2 night local getaway, the weekend of the 9th, 10th and 11th and on Wednesday the 14th, just a lovely local dinner out ..

If cooking, what are your specialties on this evening ( a week day ) ?

Have a lovely weekend,

HMMM - glad you reminded me.
I have to talk to G. My birthday is 12 days after Valentine's Day so I am thinking about a short trip to an Indian Casino about 40 miles south east. Indian as in Native American - on the reservation. The casino is just so/so. The premier restaurant - Mr. Lester's is to die for. On holidays they offer a 3 course Pre Fix menu with wine pairings. We went 2 years ago. The meal was divine! Ladies received a fresh rose when seated. The dinner offerings were wonderful. After our meal we were presented with a box of assorted dark chocolate truffles - made in house.

@ElizabethB

Sounds wonderful .. Have a beautiful Saint Valentines.

Do you recall what you had two years ago ?

Have a lovely evening ..

From several people in the restaurant trade I have been told that Valentines night is the quietest night in their establishments; the tables are all booked, but the place is full of couples who eat in virtual, awkward silence.

Lu and I will be at home with a simple meal, candles and music by Olafur Arnalds as we talk about all the fun times we've had and see off a great bottle of wine.

Edit: Lu has just reminded me that a couple of years ago we spent the evening at a show by Mark Thomas the comedian and left wing activist where he recounted his hike along the wall built by Israel partitioning the West Bank to shut out the Palestinians. Very romantic

My wife and I got engaged on Valentine's Day 1980. I booked us a table for two at a classy local restaurant, but when we arrived the table was at least six feet in diameter with a wall one side and a busy walkway the other, so we had to sit diametrically opposite each other. Not in the least romantic and I wasn't able to pop the question or pass her the ring, so on the way home I pulled up on a dark lay-by and asked her there. For this reason we vowed never again to dine out on Valentine's Day and instead I always prepare a meal at home. Works even better now our three daughters are grown up and have flown the nest.

@Master Cutler,

Lovely story .. Thank you for sharing it with C.B.

Have a lovely Saint Valentine´s ..

My wife's birthday is on Valentines Day. We went out to eat once to celebrate, when we were dating. The restaurant was packed, and the service was bad because of it. We soon realized how hopeless it is to really have an enjoyable meal on the 14th. Now, we celebrate by eating out on whatever Saturday is closest to the 14th.

Having said that, we're going to Las Vegas this year. But, we're bringing the kids. Things do change when you have a family!
