Vegan families

At one time this would have filled me with dread. Now, I am inclined to agree with @SatNavSaysStraightOn - parents following a vegan diet are more likely to be nutritionally aware, thus resulting in healthier children.

Vegans healthy? To be honest the vegans I have met/worked with look emaciated and far from healthy but then again I haven't met every single vegan in the world so I am only going on a very small group of people.

I tried vegan cake today, not to my taste but it is a commitment so you get used to it I suppose.

Well my youngest son is vegan and has been for nearly two years - 6ft 4ins, super fit and wears size XL T-shirts (muscles!). Believe me, he doesn't look emaciated. :D

Only vegan I know is my friends daughter, she's just had twins, she lives a very bohemian lifestyle. Quite odd for a young girl. She's also very skinny. I guess it takes all sorts.

My youngest daughter is 29 and has been vegan for about 10 years. Her husband is a vegan chef and three weeks ago they had their first baby. During her pregnancy she made sure that she ate all of the correct nutrients with the emphasis on B12, folic acid, calcium etc. Her baby was born at home and is a beautiful healthy little girl. As has been mentioned earlier my daughter will probably breast feed until he baby can take solid food, however long that takes. I can only conclude that as a vegan baby she will not be subjected to many of the fast food options that are now implicated in so many modern health issues. Both my daughter and her husband have given so much attention to their daughter's well being I'm sure that this vegan lifestyle is good for their family future.

This is great to hear about. I reckon the breast feeding is very important - well, it is whether vegan or not! B12 is one of the main issues with being vegan and she obviously took care of that. The difficult thing about bringing up a kid as vegan is probably peer pressure when the little girl starts to socialise with other children. It may make her feel different and that isn't always comfortable.

I take a drop of b12 every morning, my doc told me too, something to do with getting older and stomach processing food. I listen to my doc. Thing about vegans, I hope they give their kids the choice of meat in their diets. I know I had the choice, but I love meat. I also love vegetarian dishes as well.

I too grew up with meat choices. As a kid, I always preferred meat and avoided the veggies. However, now as a older person, I actually prefer vegetables. Snacking on raw cauliflower, celery and carrots is a treat, not a penalty.

I agree on veges, have you tried pakoras with veges used. They are so yummy.

Sadly "No". I am a S.A.G. (Stupid American Guy) That is to say, that I have never traveled abroad, so my knowledge of other cuisines is weak. Everyone on CookingBites seems so much more diverse in their food knowledge. This cooking forum is awesome!

It's the best and friendliest site, I'm on a few but spend more time on here. I havnt been to India yet I love their foods. Just try making something that is listed here, everyone will help you. Indian food is addictive, get aboard brother.
