We both prefer top crust pies because sometimes pastry can be thick and tasteless, these pies however are thin tasty pastry.

I'm not sure what you mean by "top crust pies".

My dear old mum, bless her, would regularly cook a meat (beef usually) and potato pie in an earthenware pot but the only crust was on the top (a bit like Fray Bentos but my mum thought of it first). There were no sides or bottom and it would be served as a stew with a section of the crust alongside or on top. I remember it as being very good.

A pie cooked in a foil tray with pastry on the top.
