What is a reduction?

I've heard the term plenty of times on cooking shows on TV - they talk about making a reduction - but what does it mean - what is the process and why would you make one?
 
Basically, it's a stock or juice or something made more concentrated by boiling or simmering. So the water content is reduced by evaporating off.
