What's with the new "member" titles?

In some parts, calling someone a "member" is a polite way of calling them a bit of of a tool, usually with connotations of a certain male sexual organ. Not sure I much like being called a member, active or otherwise, and I certainly dread the prospect of arriving a "senior member" status. Extrapolate that one! Can I have my old title back please, I quite liked it. It gave me delusions of competency in the kitchen :)

Must be honest I've never heard that one. I've been a 'member' of a bike club, several owners clubs and several forums and never had a problem with being called a 'member' [or TBH heard of anyone that has] but can't see a problem either way.

As a mod. I raised the issue of using 'fake chef' names with @SatNavSaysStraightOn. as I personally don't like them for 3 reasons:

  • I think it could be a bit insulting to professional chefs who might want to join us.
  • I think it may be confusing (at first glance) for guests who are thinking of joining and get the impression we might all be professionals.
  • I think its a bit silly - when I have shown the forum to friends I invariably have to explain as they say 'what;s that?'
So you can blame me if you want! Although I didn't expect @SatNavSaysStraightOn to take action so quickly! I think its just gone to a default setting the same as CycleChat. You can remove the title and add what you prefer as your own personal title by using Custom Title under your personal details.

It is useful to have a differentiator between new members, junior members, senior members, established members that indicates to us who is active on he site and who has been with us a while, who is a newbie here etc.

I'm happy to open a debate about the titles people would like.

After some reflection I have decided that I quite like the association with active member status (presumably it translates as "virile sex god"), and I'm so glad to have bypassed the new member ("NO don't put it there!") stage. Just let me know how many posts are needed to reach senior member ("kindly pass the viagra") status so that I can stop posting before I get there, as I'm really too young just yet. Is there a very active member ("veritable pornstar") status I might aspire to on the way? What happens when I go on holiday? Do I become an inactive member ("sorry darling, it must be the wine") for a while? When I get back, do I become a re-visiting member ("in mid life crisis"). How about guests? Do they become honorary members ("bit on the side")? And are you and SNSSO (complete with chooks) really doing the London to Brighton next year?

:roflmao::roflmao: :roflmao: and how much sherry/wine did you say you had drunk.....

Look - I don't like being called a veteran anything.

There is no default option. I have still have to do it by hand. retuning is not that easy. I would have to look up all of the equivalents again and recreate the list from scratch.

If anyone wants to override the setting, just change the setting called custom title under you profile.
Just click on your name in the top right, and is the box immediately below that of your avatar. make the changes you want and finally click on the bottom marked 'save chance's at the bottom. you can then become anything you want.

As you post more threads & replies, you "move up" and your status level changes in time.

At most forums, I'm a Senior Member.

What were you drinking?

Having read this thread I know now why I spend less of my time on cooking bites,
To many threads full of needless nonsense, you say you want to attract industry professionals ?

Its a difficult one @Berties. I don't think we are setting out to attract industry professionals as such. There are other dedicated sites for professionals. But obviously we don't want to put them off - we really value their input and expertise.

This is a community site and as such, we are trying to get more interaction and chat going by having some light-hearted threads and cracking a few jokes. Personally I would love to see more serious cooking discussions and more original recipes. I think there are more examples of this than perhaps there used to be - and indeed I've been personally honoured recently by two members trying out one of my own recipes and not only photographing the results but giving feedback. It doesn't get more committed than that! See here: Gingered Prawns with Orange Rapture Sauce and Linguine

If you look at that thread you will see there is quite a lot of serious detailed discussion about ingredients and techniques.
