Personally, I don't think I'd ever go that far. But I could be wrong, so that's why I want to hear if anyone here actually grows their own shroomies and is it worth it? This is such a wonderful ingredient in any dish, I almost worship it. :)

Home grown mushrooms are fantastic. They are so much tastier than shop bought ones, You can choose the size, harvesting some as lovely pink button mushrooms or you can let them grow into full grown plate sized field mushrooms and slice them into steaks and cook them to have them as a burger all by themself. the difference is stunning and hard to explain in writing. It is worth every penny if you can get a proper kit and not one of those rip off tiny ones that are going to dry out in minutes if you don't water them 6 times a day.... you want one that is the size of a large bag of compost on its end. They are the best ones to get. Unless you have ever tasted a freshly cut field mushroom taken from the field to your plate, you can not even consider what the difference it makes is.

I actually prefer store bought mushrooms to be honest. I mum got one of those mushroom kits and started growing them in our front yard. They tasted kind of like dirt...It wasn't great

i use a mushroom grower which is very specialist, they grow in meticulously clean temp controlled and humidity held environment, they grow varieties in saw dust and some in compost and they do get failed crops,
i spread some of the spent compost in our garden and I get various types of mushrooms from King oyster mushrooms/eryngii to abalone, especially if its damp and warm, but hey can be odd sized
