Oh yes, rich, warming and definitely comfort food. There are many recipes and variations, but basically it's slices of buttered bread baked in a custard. Yes I know that doesn't sound promising, but with quality ingrediants it is absolute bliss. Example below.

Oh, just a standard bread pudding recipe. The "and butter" had me wondering about it. That recipe sounded fabulous except currants are hard to find here.

I tend to make it with leftover pastries.

No bread pudding is different.

Yes - its a wonderful dessert! I once made a bread pudding with brioche and strawberries - but I much prefer ordinary white bread and raisins, currants etc.! It looked like this:

Hmmm. And here's the real baffler for you Cinisajoy. All the best chef's, anyone who knows anything about cooking and especially knows anything about bread and butter pudding will tell you, it is best made with stale bread. The staler, the better.
All bread pudding is better with stale breads.

Yes, I did one of those where I replied to your post having been directed to it by an alert, before I realised there was a whole bunch of other posts after it, including the one where you mentioned that you were familiar with bread pudding, just not bread and butter pudding. Apologies.

Yes but bread pudding and bread and butter pudding are different things! As the pictures above show.

I think you know what bread pudding but, if you look at a recipe for bread and butter pudding, you will see how different it is.

I did look. It looked just like a bread pudding to me. Heck it looks almost identical to the one I made the other day.

Here is what bread pudding looks like - you can eat it with your hands

and here is what Bread and Butter Pudding looks like - hot/warm and a dessert. The Velvet Curtain gave you the link to a recipe for this

Our bread pudding doesn't have milk or cream (which bread and butter pudding has)....does the US version?

Now it makes sense. The recipe the other person posted was close to an American bread pudding.
You put bread in a pan then pour a custard base over it and bake.
The last one I made had eggs, milk, vanilla and sugar.

Must be cultural differences then - confusing differing recipes!

Are we back to the Monty Python sketch of "my hovercraft is full of eels" territory of wrong translations maybe?

It looks like it.
Can you post a UK bread pudding recipe?

I see what you mean...the recipe DOES have similar ingredients but, as can be seen from the picture, the result is very different - the bread broken up and not layered i.e. no custardy effect (as with the bread and butter pudding).

Our bread pudding is made the same way. Cut or tear the stale bread. Pour the milk, sugar, eggs and vanilla and any spices and flavorings over the bread and bake until set. Note: you don't cook the custard first.
