Cup cakes seem to be the New Big Thing. They're everywhere - decorating mugs, aprons and tea towels, and there seems to be a whole lot of cup cake paraphernalia such as dedicated cookbooks, bespoke cup cake stands, special baking cases and all manner of decorations. You name it, and you probably need it to make the best-ever cup cakes.

Do you buy into the cup cake feeding frenzy? I'm afraid it's one baking trend that's passed me by. I just don't get it.

Cup cakes are too small. I do make them but mainly for when they are going to groups of people to pick at or to sell for charity.
When I bake a proper sized cake for other people I will drop a bit of the mix into a cup cake mould, or a ramekin so that I can have a taster to check it is ok.

Ramekins are a good size for single portion cakes, about the size of a decent muffin.

Cup cakes are really fairy cakes with the Americanised frosting on the top.

I don't mind them but I do find them too sweet with all that frosting on top.

I like the look of them - especially if they've been decorated with whole chocolates or sweeties.

But I'd need two or three for a proper portion!
