"Bring your own container" shops

We've just had one of these open in our High Street. We had a look round yesterday and the shop is neatly laid out. As yet, there's a fairly limited range, with lots of rice, pulses, tea, coffee and a few other things, but with luck it will expand.

Does anyone have similar shops around? What are they like? How are they getting on? That kind of thing.

Yes, we do.

There are several in the center of Canberra alone. Their ranges are excellent converting everything from all possible combinations of dried goods (cereals (as in oats), mixes of cereals (e.g. museli), dried fruit, dried fruit covered in..., rice, pasta, herbs and spices, nuts (raw, cooked, toasted, roasted and covered in yoghurt or chocolate) ) down to home-made nut butters in jars, to honey, washing liquid, washing up liquid and so on. And all of the above come in the organic or non-organic options.

If you take your own non standard containers, the trick is to take 1 spare one for them to reset their scales to for each type of container you use. They also have their own range of containers and lidded jars that you can buy the first time around etc.

We love ours but it is very easy to spend a lot of money in there. And they are expanding in number slowly but surely. We do find that the quality of what they do have is very good.

We have places that sell bulk items, like dried fruits, nuts, grains and other cereals, and cool snacks. They are not "bring your own container." They have bags for your bulk buying. My local Kroger even has a pickled veg and olive bar.

Yes, we have one locally. We are trying more things from there, having started with refilling washing up liquid bottles. It’s actually cheaper than you might expect, and it’s great that you can choose your purchase size/volume.
