• I’ve added a casual chat room to CookingBites as a place for off-topic banter, light conversation, and short-lived chit-chat that doesn’t belong in forum threads. The chat room is informal and lightly-to-not moderated, with messages being temporary, so it’s ideal for friendly back-and-forth that would otherwise derail discussions. Site rules still apply, but there’s no reporting system or expectation of post-by-post moderation - if something becomes uncomfortable, the right response is to step away. If a topic has substance or lasting value, it still belongs in the forums; everything else can head to chat.

California health officials issue warning against mushrooms poisoning outbreak

I don't have a subscription for it, so can't read the article

But I have foraged and love the ones I know and that can't be mixed up with poisonous ones.
I don't have subscription either, but I replaced the NYTimes link with abcnews.
When I was living in the Bay area, there’s always someone died of dead cap mushrooms every year, I’m very surprised people have not learned about this deadly poison.

Happens everywhere every year regular as clockwork, same as hikers falling off trails at the edge of the Grand Canyon 😶
I eat a lot of mushrooms but only store bought, much safer that way. Do you forage?
Since Day 1. I come from a family of serious mushroom hunters. There are rules to follow and ignored at your peril. 😶
Never eat a mushroom that you are not absolutely 100% certain of.

First, learn the commonly found edible mushrooms and how to identify them with and from someone who knows them.

Certain mushrooms like Ceps or Porcini (Boletus Edulis) or chanterelles for example are hard to get wrong once you know them

I don't forage. I've thought about it but not being an expert in mushroom identification thought it would be rather stupid...
The only mushroom I ever foraged for grew out of cow manure and I was quite certain what they were. I had checked out a book on mushrooms from the school library as a teenager that had illustrations!
