Has anyone tried Chinese wine? Wine has been produced in China for at least 4000 years, most Chinese wines are made from fermented glutinous rice. The best variety of rice wine is called shaoxing, it has the colour of scotch whisky and a slightly sour taste. It is used for both cooking and drinking.

Other wines that go well with Chinese food are dry roses, sparkling whites and fuller bodied reds.

I've never drunk shaoxing, but use it to cook with.

Presumably though, rather than being a wine, this kind of beverage is more of a "beer" given the brewing process that's used.

'Wine' made from rice is not technically wine. Wine can only be made from grapes - at least if it is to be sold in the EU.

I drunk Chinese wine once, many years ago, and it was ok, nothing special. However, with the large increase in Chinese consumption and local production, the quality will improve dramatically very soon - within next 5-10 years, if not sooner. Watch the shelves in your local wine emporium!
