The closing date is Thursday 15th October.

Waitrose is launching an exclusive competition to design the decoration for a cake to mark The Queen’s 90th birthday.

Her Majesty will be 90 years old on 21 April next year – and next week, on 9 September, she will also become the longest-reigning monarch in British history, surpassing Queen Victoria’s previous record of 63 years, 216 days. So what better way to celebrate than with a special birthday cake?

The winning design will be chosen by a panel of judges, including celebrated cake maker Fiona Cairns and the organisers of The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebration at Windsor Castle next May, for which Waitrose is an official partner.

Rupert Thomas, Waitrose marketing director, said: ‘We are a nation of passionate and creative cooks, and I know the designs will be fit for such a historic celebration. We’ll be looking for cake decorations that not only look really lovely but also show what The Queen means to all of us.’

Simon Brooks-Ward, who is the director of the festivities taking place at Windsor Castle in May, said: ‘We are delighted that Waitrose is celebrating The Queen’s 90th birthday in this way. It is a great idea that allows everyone to take part.’

The winning design will top a Waitrose Duchy Organic fruit cake, and will be available to buy from Waitrose stores from 21 April.

Entrants to the competition should send an email with their name, age, address, daytime telephone number and a photograph or scanned drawing of their cake design to cake.competition@waitrose.co.uk. The closing date for entries is midnight on Thursday, 15 October.

Sales of Waitrose Duchy Organic products provide a donation to The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Foundation. This year, more than £2.5 million will be distributed to support good causes in across the UK.
