If you are vegetarian or vegan then you will want to know that the wax used to cover the apples is often made from beetle mucus (which the creatures use to cover and protect their eggs). Many apples (and other fruits) in UK supermarkets are waxed to help protect and preserve them. The Sun newspaper asked the major UK supermarkets if they stock apples covered in this wax and at the time this article was published (October 2016) only Sainsbury’s and Lidl had replied saying that their apples are wax free.
