Sherlock Holmes was a favourite of mine when I was growing up and these 2 for me were cast perfectly in their roles. They will always be top of my tree.

We watched all those on rebroadcast when we lived there, and having seen Basil Rathbone’s Holmes, and a few others over the years (including parodies), I must say, Jeremy Brett’s portrayal is the gold standard.

I must say, for myself, I’ve always preferred David Suchet’s interpretation of Poirot - he perfectly displayed the detective’s ego and fussiness, and Hugh Fraser’s Captain Hastings was hilariously clueless most episodes…and really didn’t seem to mind at all.

When I first saw Brett's take on Holmes (I was an adult), I was bothered- this wasn't the Holmes of my imagination, having grown up on the Conan Doyle stories. After seeing a few more, it hit me that he was right, I was wrong, and that he absolutely NAILED Holmes. The series was definitive and (shockingly) true to the original text.

I really liked Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes. Robert Downey Jr. did a darker Holmes, which was interesting.

David Suchet’s interpretation of Poirot...

Yes, he was my favorite, too.

Peter Falk as Lieutenant Columbo in the TV show Columbo was another favorite of mine. Talk about quirky.

His famous line, "One more thing..."

Always right before he revealed the killer.

Thinking about American detective shows, I always liked Quincy. Where else could Jack Klugman be a playboy coroner living on his bachelor pad boat down at the harbor?

Oh, and then there is Jim Rockford -- Rockford Files. Another favorite, played by screen legent James Garner.

Every car guy my age spent time in an empty parking lot learning the famous Jim Rockford J-Turn.
