someone mentioned insurance - my car insurance has gone up $300 a year for the past 3 years. Not bad for someone who has never placed a claim, only has one speeding ticket rfom 20 years ago and some very VERY high standared specialized driving courses behind me.
Insurance is a 4 letter word here in California. I was told by some people who I play games with weekly, they are denied insurance sometimes. I never had an accident for 48 years, not a single ticket in the last 30 years, never claimed for any insurance and my insurance double from a few years ago.

Insurance is a dirty word any where I think. I know back home, you pay your registration each year and that includes basic insurance - NO insurance companies involved unless you want to involve them for more insurance. The same applies to health insurance. I pay 1% of my annual income and get everything I need, doctors pharmacuticals, dentistry, emergency rooms, hospital stays, optometry all of the fundemental medical needs required. If you want more such as elective surgery then you go to an insurance company and pay whatever for that additional coverage. Oh, and I get that health coverage from the day I am born till the day I die as do all Australians - 1% of your annual income - I pay less a year in Australila than most people pay here for a month to get less and have some little beaurocrat tell us what we can and can't have.

Okay, rant over and I apologise but prices here (across the board) in NYS have gone out of control over the past few years and I am sure they have in other parts of the country as well.

I'm lucky with my truck insurance. I don't pay a nationalized fee like y'all are. I pay by the mile. It's a flat monthly rate of $35 plus $0.038/mile I drive a month. I upload an odometer pic on the 2nd of the month and get the bill on the 7th and it's auto deducted on the 9th. Real simple.

A "user pays" sort of system - I like the sounds of that so long as the base rate remains constant

Yes, I found this company in '21 and the base rate, and mileage rate, haven't really changed. The mileage rates went down 2% after my first year.

I'm, with a mob called Erie but will take a look at these guys. I think this may work well for me as I have three vehicles, my summer car, ny winter vehicle and my bike. Needless to say my summer car doesn't get driven in the winter due salting etc, nor does my bike for obvious reasons, while my winter 4WD doesn't get much use in the spring/summer months.
