When I click on 'New Posts' something always shows up, even if it is only old threads that have not been updated since my last time on.

I'd only be concerned if you see that and visit the home page and see forum titles on bold. If they are all greyed out, and you've got this as well, it's correct.

With MG off at present and it being the New Year, the site is a tad quieter than normal.
