Pasta is my very favorite dish, and sweet is my favorite flavor. I really never through that I would ever find them together in a way that works, but the brilliant people in the home kitchens of the British Isles have managed it.
There are many versions, but I gathered that the general gist of this dish are broken down into:
the main ingredient:
- macaroni (of course), and this can be cooked in the milk, or separately in water and added back later.
liquids and sauce:
- milk (although I'd substitute soya for dairy)
- egg (non-ovo vegetarians substitute cornstarch maybe? I think that a flax egg might not cut it)
main flavorings:
- sugar (of course, unless the preserved fruits are very sweet and there's a lot of it)
- citrus rind (a must, whether that's grated lemon zest or a bit of orange peel to be infused by the milk and remove later)
- dried fruit, usually raisins
optional flavorings:
- brandy
- nuts
- jams, especially marmalade
- butter
