Does anyone have a grill (that's 'broiler' in Anerican 'speak') with their cooker that uses single digit numbers on its control knob? I bought a cooker last May with this feature and the instructions are very vague. If anyone can enlighten me, I'd be very grateful.

Well, that’s crap - I can’t find a manual for it online, though I can find other people complaining about the confusing knob situation.

Are you sure its an electric oven?

Just to clarify

This is a gas oven with an electric grill.

The Kenwood KS303GSS is a gas fan oven with an electric grill. It has a defrost mode, which could be handy for thawing chicken. But how well does this oven perform the basic everyday tasks like baking cakes, and is it easy to clean? Read the full expert review below to find out how well it did in our rigorous lab tests.

The numbers likely as not so not relate to anything except 1-5 indicating very low, low, medium, high, very high (or something similar).

(1-5 is guesswork from experience of Kenwood cookers)

temperature control when broiling is a meaningless concept.

the broiler element comes on, they get hot, they glow red.
one adjusts the "broiling power" by changing the distance from the glowing elements to the grillee.

Whether it’s actually making a practical difference or not, I don’t know, but some ovens do include broiler/grill adjustment - from a simple “Low-Medium-High” knob, to ones that let you adjust the temp just like you do for the oven (mine is like that). When I was a kid and even into adulthood, all the ovens seemed to just have a single on/off setting for the broiler/grill.

Does it matter much in the long run? I couldn’t tell you that. I just know how long to leave stuff in mine to get it done.

my electric oven has a Broil setting. when selected, the temperature display reads 550' (F) and there is no way to change it....
but as the heat builds up, the oven safety thermostat turns the coils off and on . . . it broils, or it does not broil.

so I fixed that - a dohickey to prop the door open and simultaneously keep the 'door closed' switch depressed.
the coils come on, stay on.

In the UK, all electric grills (and those here in Australia as well) have controls on them and often only flow red when on the highest setting and the shelf tends to have only 1 position.

Given that the OP is from the UK and this is a UK grill, those numbers are not meaningless and on dedicated grills (often a smaller unit or a separate area of the cooker entirely when they are self standing units) there is no way to alter the position of the grill pan. (This won't be the case in this situation though).

As you can see from mine here, there are not exactly many positions to try.

My in-laws all have this style cooker with grill at the top and there is only 1 position for the grill pan. This style cooker is still pretty common in both Australia and the UK. you control the heat by the numbers on the dial.
