Non-traditional Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. How about you?

That sounds almost traditional to me. You hate turkey and you have candied yams! Ok. As you say, its partly traditional.

No Thanksgiving here obviously.

Why are turkeys traditional for Thanksgiving?
My wife is an American woman with Polish and Italian heritage. I made a dinner that catered to her heritage Polish sauerkraut soup, Italian tetrazzini and American turkey and candied yams. She loved it and I enjoyed it too.

The pilgrims who had traveled to the new world reached a point of near starvation. One day mother nature provided a light rain that saved their crop and their lives. Thanksgiving was a feast intended to thank that rain or perhaps the spiritual source of it. Of course they served turnkey at that feast since it was a native bird and readily available. So we continue to eat turkey at Thanksgiving to this day. That is the story.

Like the OP, my wife (American) and I (Australian) aren't eating traditionally - mainly because neither of us like turkey so we had a seasoned chicken breast each with the mandatory (in my humble opinion) stuffing, sweet potatoes (yams) and brown gravy. For dessert it was a choice between good old fashioned Apple Pie or my wifes home made Orange peices in Jelly.

Traditional or not - it was still darn good :)
