Mainly, it’s just part of the mythology surrounding the “first Thanksgiving” - as near as anyone can tell, though, seafood probably figured in a lot more during that meal than anything else! Why are turkeys traditional for Thanksgiving?

My wife is an American woman with Polish and Italian heritage. I made a dinner that catered to her heritage Polish sauerkraut soup, Italian tetrazzini and American turkey and candied yams. She loved it and I enjoyed it too. That sounds almost traditional to me. You hate turkey and you have candied yams! Ok. As you say, its partly traditional.
No Thanksgiving here obviously.
