Today in sumner the sky was all grey, sun was blurry, it's from the fires near you, it's that strong I can smell smoke now, the sky is eerily dark. Man it must be bad near you. It's all over Christchurch and as far south as timaru. At least I didn't get burnt today.

Update, skies still covered in smoke, but not as bad as yesterday. The world is indeed a small place. More deaths as people get caught out. It's terrible.

Only just seen this, but yes Wednesday was bad. Mind you, it's been bad for several (3-4) weeks here. I'm actually up at the moment at 3.30am, rebuIising yet again, due to problems with my asthma after failing to get any relief from my inhalers. Guessing that means it is not great again outside.

Tomorrow, or in the morning, more accurately, is meant to be the really bad day from the fighting point of view. fingers crossed. The promised rain which was 70% chance .
of 10-20mm of rain, is now 40% chance of less than 1mm. So in other words, no rain yet again. :(

The closest fire to me, as I write this, is still 60km away. It is dry lightning strikes that are going to be the problem. Most of these fires have now been confirmed to be as a result g dry lightning strikes or from embers from such fires.

It is truely terrible.

I hear you on nebulisers, I have a squirt of orange in the morning as a preventer, stopped 6 months ago because I had no problems. Got chesty Thursday , daughter made me go to docs. Put me back on to clear my chest. And steroids to clear it. Feeling dangerous today. :)

It's taken 3 days on 50mg of prednisone on top of all of my other asthma meds to get my asthma under control enough for me to actually be able to talk (and that is in addition to the salbutamol and atrovent nebulisers that I don't normally take, I have 3 inhalers and 4 sets of tablets to control my asthma normally) . I take hydrocortisone (natural steroid in the body needed for everything, I don't produce cortisol) normally.

I can't tell I'm on steroids. I'm exhausted.
Seeing my doctor in Wednesday, if I can get there. She's much closer to the fires, where we used to live, so I actually have to go to worse air quality to see her about the problems with my asthma caused by the air quality...

It's not yet 9am here and already well over 33°C. It had hit 30°C before 8am today.

30°C is the temperature above which you have to be careful with fire. There are 3 30's that the RFS teach as being important with fire and making for bad conditions. Above 30°C (8am check), below 30% humidity (8:30am check) and above 30kph wind (not yet but due to happen soon. )

Snap to prednisone, I'm on 10 day course. Feel real good ATM. Have you seen specialists about your breathing? I'm taking it you have? Nothing worse than asthma problems, I don't have it but I'm a bit chesty at times, prolly from 40 /50 cig gives a day. Gave up 13 years ago. As I said earlier, stay safe and get out if need be. Human life over animals is paramount.

Easier to name the specialists I haven't seen over the years. i'm a severe, brittle asthmatic
with both allergy and exercise triggers. I've a half sister with CF, so there is the potential for other issues as well. Not all forms of CF kill prematurely as it turns out. But whilst we can still cope with my breathing issues, it is one of the few areas where it is better not to have even have been tested because just by being tested you'll never get health insurance again (certainly applies to the U<k, not sure about Ans/NZ).

But by far the biggest issue to controlling my asthma is the reliance the pharmaceutical industry has on using Lactose monohydrate as both a tablet filler and the base for the powder form of the stick inhalers and other more modern medications for control moving away from the aerosol form of inhalers. when Lactose monohydrate is manufactured in the lab from non-dairy sources I can have the medication but the tendency for saving money in the farm of the generic drugs is where we run into problems. My allergy to dairy proteins extends as far as contaminants in Lactose monohydrate when it is made you a dairy source to save money.

My allergy is sensitive enough that I go into anaphylactic shock when exposed to even the smallest amount of my trigger. I have had allergic reactics in front of doctorso nurses, to antihistamine tablets amongst other drugs. We know it is the Lactose monohydrate because I have had anaphylactic shock to1 drug that only contains 2 chemicals and when the alternative form of that drug was given to me, I am fine (still on it). But just to complicate matters, I can have some medication that contains Lactose monohydrate and be absolutely fine with it. the only common theme is that they are all branded drugs and thus the tablet filler is either made in the lab and never been anywhere near a cow, or is cleaned purified to a much higher standard. Such is the previous life of SNSSO as an organic Chemist!

About the only thing It has ever been useful for except getting raided by the drug squad back in the UK, because of where we Iived, a slightly higher than average electricity bill because 2 houses lived off one meter with a sub-meter billing the other property privately and our stolen creditcard details being used on a website to try to purchase chloroform ... used in the purification and manufacture of certain drugs. So my Chemistry degree and the fact that I dropped out of a PHD in organic Chemistry after 2½ years made me an immediate target for a full scale, armed drug raid!
