Pano?

I was watching "Beat The Devil" with Humphrey Bogart and his character comments to Gina Lola Brigida's character when she suggested they needed to do something to increase their financial state, "I'm going to go downstairs and drink a lot of pano."

Pano? The context suggests an alcohol drink of some sort, but a search of the web turns up zip, except for a Norwegian type beer brewed by a Milwaukee brewery with a Mexican name, - Hacienda Brewery. Else, it may be a type of cocktail.

Does anybody know what Boggie was going down to guzzle?

You don't know? Its a great ingredient to cook with. Its an anise flavoured liqueur which when diluted with water turns opaque. Also known as pastis in France:

Mmmmm Pernod/Pastis...love it! Though I often forget that we've got a bottle in the cupboard and usually reach for the Sambuca instead.

Here's a vintage bottle of Pastis we have in the cupboard. According to the label on the back its supposed to be diluted 1:5 with very cold water. But don't put it in the fridge...it turns cloudy if it gets too cold!

I say vintage, because its definitely pre-Euro
