Recently, lot of images have been coming out sideways. Often it's a picture that on your device shows correctly, but even before inserting the image, from the thumbnail, it is clear out is sideways.

This is not a fault with the site.

A recent update to Android devices is causing the problem. It is even affecting my own device and my own images as well. (Old discontinued devices running Android software that no longer receives updates will not be affected, though I'd not be using unpatchable software myself.)

The solution, edit your image, then upload. Add a single dot somewhere, or better still, just a tiny, minor crop and save. Rotating and saving alone, does not always fix the image. I do not know why, but that doesn't always overwrite the data the site users to automatically detect orientation.

If you do it before uploading the image, on the full sized version, you'll get a better result than a moderator downloading your image, rotating it and saving, then uploading an already size reduced image a second time.

I pay attention to the orientation thing while the camera is on. Sometimes I have to angle the phone up for the sensor to correct then angle down for the shot.
The photos are upright in my phone gallery (it's not hard to edit and rotate them on my phone on the rare occasion), and all of the time (since I joined here in 2020) except once they've upright when I posted them here. It was just a few weeks ago and I uploaded 3 photos, and 1 of them kept going sideways (I unattached and reattached it a few times and looked at the toolbar trying to figure out how to rotate it manually,). I ended up reporting it and had a mod fix it since I didn't know how.

If you turn your phone sideways to take a picture, it will sometimes come out that way (sideways) when posted. I used to have that problem. I had to edit on laptop and rotate before saving.

Virtually every single horizontal food pic I take with my iPhone is initially oriented incorrectly in my camera roll. Since I always edit and click that auto-enhance button anyway, it’s not an issue for me to give them a quick rotate, either.

So do I, but recently images uploaded to CB have been sideways much more frequently than normal. As moderators, it was one here or there a week. At the moment, it is close to 10% of all images uploaded are having to be modified by the moderators to correct the orientation. And it all started a day or two after that last update.

Even my own images are affected and I know they are showing correctly on my phone, but upload them to CB and they're sideways. As a photographer, that bugs me big time.

Samsung rolled out their monthly security updates last night. It hit my phone overnight, but not my OH's identical handset. Hopefully we will see a reduction in the numbers.

Sometimes I have to clear the cache in the gallery app and/or the browser if it loads wrong the first time. I've an app for that or it can be done via system settings.
