It is common to think of barbecue when outdoor cooking or outdoor dining is mentioned. But that's not really always the case. When we go to a river for picnic, our usual fare would be Adobo - that is pork and chicken cooked in vinegar and soy sauce. Another dish is stuffed milk fish. We also bring steamed crabs or prawns depending on the occasion.

So what food do you prepare for picnics?

At this time of year when lots of people take vacation and schools are also off, picnics are very popular here. Families pack picnic baskets and head to the countryside to enjoy the outdoors while snacking on some nice delicacies.

The type of food that we would prepare for a picnic depends on the time of day that the picnic is being held. If the picnic is held after lunch time, then we would pack sandwiches, slices of cake or sweet bread, and some snacks like nuts or potato chips, along with cooling drinks like lemonade or fruit juice. If it is an all-day picnic, then food would be cooked which would usually be a simple meal, nothing complicated. Usually it would be a meal like chicken chowmein or cook-up rice, meaning a one pot meal with the meat mixed into the rice. We would try to avoid travelling with things like gravy which is liable to spill. Cookies or cake along with drinks would also be taken along which would be used later on in the evening.

Good old British staple scotch eggs, boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat
Flour egg and read crumbed and deep fried
Or a hand raised pork pie with pickle

We usually don't have very fancy food for a picnic. Maybe fried chicken and potatoes salad if we buy the food at the store, otherwise just simple sandwiches and salad and cookies. It sounds like picnics are a pretty big food event for you.

Home-made bread, quail's eggs, home-made game pate, smoked salmon, baby tomatoes, potato salad, Champagne - this is if I'm feeling indulgent. Otherwise its Scotch eggs, and sandwiches! Here's one of the earliest pictures of a picnic. An Illustration from a French edition of The Hunting Book of Gaston Phoebus, 15th century.

When we are going for a picnic we usually pack up the charcoal bbq and bring along some pork chop, chicken breasts or sausages. If we are not going to bbq the we will have fried chicken. For sides we usually bring along some pasta salad, rolls, potato salad and some fresh fruit for dessert. Just your traditional picnic foods. Wine, cheese and crackers and grapes are always nice when my partner and I go for a romantic picnic.
