Plans for today (2026)

Doesn't "run flat" tire goo throw off the balance and wear?
No idea, my mechanic didn't worry my pretty little blonde head about it by going into details, lol. He just asked me not to do it unless I had no other options. I have full coverage with free roadside assistance and I live 10 miles from the shop. It's a completely different situation from badjak of course.

Edited: not 19 miles, 10.

I don't even know what a silent tyre is....
I'm sure it's fine to use with mine
Probably what my mechanic was irritated about is that it makes a goopy mess and goes everywhere (2nd article).

It's not like you live 10 miles from the shop and I'd guess roadside assistance isn't a thing...

With my car insurance, if my car gets a flat or anything else, I call the number on my insurance card and a mobile mechanic or tow truck will be there in 15-45 minutes (usually 20 minutes) and theyll change out my tire or tow me where it needs to go, all covered by my insurance.

I've got a mini compressor in the tool box and the plug kit.

My plans for today were just to work from home, but while I was making breakfast, I got a call from my music teacher. He’d had 2 rose-breasted grosbeaks collide with his living room window. One died on impact, but the other survived.

So, into a cardboard box it went, and I offered to drive it to a rehab facility. Luckily we found one only about 45 min away that could take it. So I drove to his place, picked up the bird, drove up to the rehab, and dropped it off. It survived the trip and was sitting upright when we arrived, which is a good sign. So I left it in their capable hands, made a donation to cover the cost of his care, drove back home, and had my breakfast at around 11:30.

Fingers crossed the bird survives - I offered to drive it back here if it does so it can be released closer to home.

You are such a good soul.

Thanks Jas. I do the best I can - there are ways to prevent this from happening in the first place, and I spend a decent amount of time at work advocating, applying for funding, and when I do get funding, managing these types of projects. Unfortunately, it can sometimes be difficult to convince the holders of the purse strings to fund these types of retrofits.

I really do encourage everyone who can, to treat their windows to prevent bird collisions. There’s an inexpensive product called Feather Friendly you can buy online and apply that will stop the problem from happening. I’ve got it on several windows at my house and cottage, as well as a few buildings at work. Window collisions are estimated to kill around 1 billion birds annually in North America (yes, that’s billion with a B.)

Terribly sad. That isn't a common occurrence with us, perhaps because our windows are grids and have screens? Only once did we have a robin who kept trying to attack his reflection about 6 years ago (when that window did not have a screen on it for some reason). He moved on and it hasn't happened since.
