Recipe Smoky Tomato Chutney

Not a chutney, but we have a smoked tomato salsa, where even the cilantro gets a little smoke, that we loved. Haven't made it in forever, but still have the recipe, checked before I posted, if anyone is interested.

No, it needs to be smoked on a wood or charcoal fired grill to get the correct flavor.
I adapted a "trick" I learned in an old Indian cookbook. The author made a smoky cauliflower curry by putting an onion skin in the pan, then putting a piece of hot charcoal into the onion skin, then putting a lid on the pan. That worked but it was a bit complicated.
I used to have a cast iron griddle pan, and when I wanted something smoked, I'd hop up the garden and pick a few mango twigs. These would go into the griddle pan until they caught fire; then I'd add whatever I wanted to smoke (usually aubergines, but chicken worked as well) and cover the pan with foil. Any fruit twigs would work.
I don't know whether this might work with your salsa, medtran49, because I haven't made it.
