In the old west of North America, the US and its then territories, cowboys would fix up a quick and low cost meal called sofkey. Sofkey is more typical still in the southeastern US among the native peoples, such as the Seminoles. It typically consisted of hominy or dried corn kernels with a meat that might be anything shot, from rabbit, venison and even snake. It was often flavored using wood ash and as a stew was served as a shared meal.

Now, I doubt it is worth asking whether anyone has tried sofkey, as it doesn't sound like gourmet cuisine. But one never knows. It may still be being made and consumed today.

Also dating back to those times of the old west is something called corn dodgers which also originated out of the US Southeast. Corn Dodgers are fried corn meal balls and they are still made and eaten today, deep fried, as a side to fried chicken or fried seafood meals. Today they are called hushpuppies, although the term corn dodger may still be applicable.

Sofkey and corn dodgers are hardly what cowboys are often perceived to eat on the trail, cowboy beans.
