Hubby's grandma use to make a sweet bread that was called sweet potato bread. She died several years ago and I guess no one in the family remembers the exact recipe. He would constantly be after me to get into the kitchen and experiment and make him some sweet potato bread. I tried this. I asked his sisters, mother and aunts if any of them remember the recipe and I got quite a bit of jibberish out of everyone. Needless to say my concoctions were all wrong.

Well a few years have gone by since my last attempt and I have given up. Hubby got it in his mind to make it himself. He used a yellow cake mix and mashed up some sweet potatoes to go in with it. He added a few other things as well but did not share them. Needless to say he got it to turn out looking correct but it does not taste right to him. I am wondering if he did not put the right spices in.

Have you ever heard of sweet potato bread?

I've not heard of it, but it sounds wonderful - i have just googled some recipes - I can think of endless uses for it with stews & soups.

I quite fancy trying this one http://www.wholefoodsimply.com/wholefood-simply-bread/ or this one http://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/southern-sweet-potato-bread/fa7adb74-376d-4142-9e56-ac29b358571d . they are completely different from each other - the first one probably working well for a bread replacement with a soup, the 2nd one as a snack.

Do you know if it had coconut in it? raisins? pecans? or cinamon?

This one also looks good - where the sweet potato is not cooked first - http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/sweet-potato-bread-50400000123585/ do you know if the sweet potato when in cooked and mashed to the batter/dough or was it in raw?

He calls it bread but it looks more like a pie without the crust to me in a way. I will have to take a picture of the one he makes this weekend. He said he was going to make some today.

I have never heard of this but it sounds divine! My mother loves anything with sweet potato so this would be a big hit in my house.

I have never heard of a sweet potato bread. Does it have a sweet potato filling? Maybe he needs some more spice. When I make sweet potatoes I use all spice, cinnamon and nutmeg. Brown sugar compliments it as well.

I have never heard of sweet potato bread before. I'm a big fan of the sweet potato. It really doesn't need a lot of spices. When I make sweet potato pies, I only use sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and real vanilla extract.
