I loved this dish even as a tiny kid. amazed my mom. its bitter. it HAS to be good for us; it is so bitter. I imagine its full of phytonutrients or something. (I'm guessing here)

but I cooked dinner this morning because the weather is so hot here. its difficult to cook, even outdoors. so I fired up the wok this morning to cook Bitter Melon w Chicken. I'll eat it tonight after I simply cook some rice. I pulled out a tiny bit to taste. yum.

The subject of bitter melon came up recently here. There was a bit of confusion about it as it goes under different names. I've cooked with it and know it as karela. The ones I buy are rather small. I'm not sure of the scale of your image...

Here is what I cooked a while back - as I said then they are beautifully bitter. Recipe - Bitter Gourd (Karela) Curry with Eggs
