Dunno...
Suddenly remembered that my dad on e bought dried broad beans and they tasted disgusting... He tried to maintain they were nice, but ended up throwing them out.
They were plain I think, so the recipe you want them for will be a whole different thing (and maybe my taste buds changed) :)
I just read somewhere they have a funky taste...

Yeah, this.
A bit off, or peculiar.
As in, maybe that meat should have been chucked in the bin yesterday. But it might be OK.
Never having eaten meat/fish since I was 11, I have no idea*. (One exception being whilst cycling around the world, a couple of places in eastern Europe it was impossible to avoid it).

You don't need to eat something to know it's a bit off.
There's always the smell test. Saying something is "funky" could also mean the smell is a bit peculiar. Or not what you were expecting.
Especially if it smelled like an earthy barnyard when you are smelling food.

Yeah, not something I want my food to smell like.
But I know how an odor can permeate your sinuses and that's all you can taste or smell.
Thus: Funky.

Exactly!
One of life's mysteries that has always confused me; If I don't want to smell it, why would I breathe through my mouth and get it into my olfactories?

Funny thing is, there are some food items which smell rather 'funky' but taste really good. Thai fish sauce is a classic example. Durian fruit, possibly another. And of course, some ripe cheeses.
