I was thinking a little about my mom today, and what we ate growing up, and how I had certain things she made that I really liked and looked forward to.

One of those was her chicken-and-dumplings (the dumplings being what some people call slicks, not those bready things dolloped on top of a stew). I always loved those and when I left home, she’d always make them for me when I came home for a visit.

For members here…do any of you have a favorite meal that a parent or grandparent or someone else cooked when you were a child that you look back on with a certain amount of fondness?

Mine was probably cheese pie.
First of all, it wasn't a pie.
Secondly, cheese was a joint/secondary ingredient, so the name sort of makes no sense.
A pile of mashed potatoes, mixed up with (probably) a whole pound of cheddar cheese, and baked in the oven until the edges got crispy. We kids would fight over the "crispy bits".
I still make it, especially on those odd occasions when I think "what the heck am I going to eat today?"

I'm trying to remember...
I know mum made a very good hachée (Indonesian style) which was my brother's favourite
Now mine...
I think it was nasi goreng with meatball and fried egg, or maybe smoor (Indonesian long cooked pork) both cooked by my dad. This was once I was a bit older. Or was it the erwtensoep (Dutch pea soup)?
Before that, I think it was a white bean oven dish cooked by my mum

My grandmothers mini meatballs. She always made an entire pan of them for me when I came to visit because she thought my parents didn't feed me well ( as you all know, they didn't). It was such a treat. For a long time meatballs with cauliflower with white sauce and sauteed potatoes was my favorite food because she made it for me ❤️
That’s actually the only real childhood favorite I had until I discovered Indonesian food at about 10 years old when we first saw some Indonesian relatives . From that moment on Indonesian food took the lead, satay from the barbecue is amazing 🤗

Kromeski’s she hardly ever made them (I suspect she would have viewed them as unhealthy) but they were great. No bacon in hers though.
They also signalled she was in a rare good mood so that added to the flavour.

Never heard if them but found various definitions. So what were they? They sound Polish.

Something my mom made once a year, some sort of head cheese. I still try to make this dish once a year, but I’m not very good at it though, very clumsy but thanks to all the collagen they stick, pretty tasty(to me) as the final product, and much better than store bought which has a lot of fat.
I make that! We've a thread here with some like I make.
