I found this on the California Avocados website:

"The “bumps” (not the pebbly bumps that are part of the Hass Avocado’s external skin) found on your avocado, or the occurrence of hard, corky or woody “pebbles” in the flesh of Hass avocados is rare. Avocados naturally have a defense mechanism that allows a wound to the skin to be “corked off” resulting in pebble-like nodes in the pulp. The bumps are not harmful."

Sounds like an avocado that's seen some rough times.

and thank you. I had cut into one, but their size made it difficult to photograph without specialist equipment that I no longer have. There was a greenish hard layer surrounding a darker bark line node for want of a better expression. I had assumed that they were not harmful, but it is not the first time (or even the second time for that matter) that I have found them inside but this one was particularly bad, though tasted delicious and was spot on for ripeness!
