I'm really not certain where to put this. In theory I guess it ought to go into meat but given I found these in the wood shed whilst chopping wood and have no plans whatsoever to eat them, I'll just go for the "from the garden" forum instead. It is after a tree that came down in this "garden" even if said garden is a working sheep ranch.

I found 6 in total, but I suspect that there are more in that log and many more logs have piles of saw dust a centimeter or more wide and high on them.... many many more....

Yes, they are true witchetty grubs growing in a wattle (though long since dead).

Scale, well without gloves on, my 4 fingers are 7cm or almost 3 inches wide!

The chooks thought them a fantastic treat and where last seen fighting over them. 19 chooks to 6 grubs.

I suppose I'd have to be in true survival mode to try one of those... I bet they taste quite earthy lol
I don't think they are earthy at all. They don't live in the ground but in wood, so don't go near soil. they eat dead wood.
They are described as a crunchy almond when lightly cooked.
