Hospital food

[Mod.Edit. Post edited to retain hospital food related content - the whole post has been copied to a new thread (MG)]

I had my heart attack whilst preparing Christmas lunch. It was quite bad so they took me by ambulance to the regional specialist heart hospital Broadgreen Liverpool. I was in theater for the afternoon so I missed the Queens speech and the annual showing of the Great Escape. I woke up in my room connected to all-sorts of beepy things. Broadgreen spends more money on food than any other NHS hospital then. I had to watch my younger brother demolish a large platter of food from the buffet lunch. It included Bagels, smoked salmon and cream cheese.
The NHS, I can only say I had wonderful treatment throughout my life.

Mod.Comment: I've let this drift off topic into medical insurance/provision. It sort of related to the thread topic but I can move the relevant posts to a new thread if enough members would like me to. Otherwise I'll leave it. Shout if you want it moved...

One thing I hated about the food in the hospital I spent most time in, was the timing. Lunch was really early and was the hot meal. I simply don't get that hungry at midday. The evening meal was sandwiches, served at 5.30 pm. I normally eat much later in the evening and that would be my main hot meal. I ended up keeping the sandwiches for later and munching on them when everyone else was asleep. In fact, sandwiches were the best option in general as although plain they were edible.

One thing I did, was get someone to bring me a little bottle of Tabasco sauce and some chilli flakes. Both were very handy for livening up the food.

Ah what a thoughtful person 😍 I started bringing in soy sauce for that reason too

I had the same problem with hospital meals, breakfast was too late for me (about 9 ish, I normally eat it at 6.30) and dinner too late. I can't eat dinner late because my bowels will keep me up.

Sandwiches were never a dinner option where I stayed, I would have definitely chosen that over dry cooked potatoes anytime.

Here is where hospitals, and airlines mess up. Chicken Breast! AKA: Shoe Leather!

It is not because they can't cook, but because there is no way to prepare chicken breast in an institutional kitchen for consumption by a lot of people well after it is cooked. A top chef couldn't do it.
