One of the recipes for the rhubarb comp is a bircher. It seems to me to be a flavoured porridge. So I was wondering what it is and why it is called a bircher?

It is the creation of Maximilian Bircher-Benner, a Swiss doctor and nutritionist, who developed it for patients at his Zurich sanatorium at the turn of the last century as a way of shoehorning yet more raw fruit into their diets. His charges started every single meal with a bowl of his “little mush”

OTOH it can mean:

Bircher
ˈbəːtʃə/
noun
  1. a member or supporter of the John Birch Society, an extreme right-wing and anti-communist American organization founded in 1958.
