Firstly its not a sandwich! Its cheese on ham on toast.

The smell of burning toast (and cheese) is cozy and familiar.
Yep, that's classic comfort food. I make a "from-scratch" version Campbell's tomato soup, so I can have that traditional from-childhood taste while being able to say I actually cooked it.That is another common Mercan thing, grilled cheese and tomato soup.
