low calorie

A very-low-calorie diet (VLCD), also known as semistarvation diet and crash diet, is a type of fad diet with very or extremely low daily food energy consumption. It is defined as a diet of 800 kilocalories (3,300 kJ) per day or less. Modern medically supervised VLCDs use total meal replacements, with regulated formulations in Europe and Canada which contain the recommended daily requirements for vitamins, minerals, trace elements, fatty acids, protein and electrolyte balance. Carbohydrates may be entirely absent, or substituted for a portion of the protein; this choice has important metabolic effects. Medically supervised VLCDs have specific therapeutic applications for rapid weight loss, such as in morbid obesity or before a bariatric surgery, using formulated, nutritionally complete liquid meals containing 800 kilocalories or less per day for a maximum of 12 weeks.Unmonitored VLCDs with insufficient or unbalanced nutrients can cause sudden death by cardiac arrest either by starvation or during refeeding.

    Recipe Lower calorie lemon muffins

I love to make these because they're so zesty and flavorful and still not as rich as regular cupcakes. Ingredients: 200 g self raising flour 2 large eggs 75 g golden caster sugar 50 ml sunflower oil 150 ml low fat natural yoghurt 2 tbsp skimmed milk 1 tsp of bicarbonate of soda Finely grated...

How to make a low calorie cookie -- with panade?

When I was a kid there was a show called Remington Steel. In one episode, the man who created the calorie-free chocolate chip cookie was murdered, and all these years later I still think about that cookie. It's the Holy Grail, for me, anyway. The other day I had some extra "de-watered" yogurt...

How to caramelise onions without fat

You might ask 'why should I want to caramelise onions without fat?'. There is probably only one reason and that is to save calories, which for me is a perpetual quest. Every tablespoon of oil has around 120 calories so if I can make something without oil and without sacrificing taste, then I...

    Recipe Skinny Smoked Salmon Salad

Less than 75 calories and very delicious! I used beech smoked salmon from Aldi, which is excellent value. This is so simple to make that it barely warrants a recipe, but I’m trying to compile a list of really low calories meals for my own use (lest I forget them) and thought others who are...

Recipe Warm Yellow Bean Salad with Anchovy Dressing (low fat)

I came across these yellow beans in the supermarket (imported from Kenya). They taste very similar to green beans but perhaps more 'musky'. Inside the pods are tiny pale green beans which may account for that flavour. Anchovies work wonderfully with fresh beans so I set about creating a simple...

Recipe Scalloped Potatoes with Saffron & Ricotta (low calorie)

This is a great way to make a low fat potato bake. Its an easy recipe to assemble but you do need to allow at least an hour for the potatoes to cook through in the oven. This quantity is enough to fill a small baking dish or tin (approx. .5 litres/1 pt capacity). There are approximately 150...

Recipe Spaghetti with Spinach and Parmesan

Gloriously green and satisfyingly simple to make, this dish really showcases spinach. For a vegetarian version, use a non-rennet hard cheese in place of Parmesan. Ocado stock a good Italian hard cheese*. For a vegan version use plant milk in place of dairy milk and a vegan Parmesan substitute**...
