Afternoon Tea, Anyone?

A splendid spread. I am guessing you didn't make the macaroons?
Thanks! Yes, that’s the only thing I didn’t make (and the bread).

Question. If you are partaking in afternoon tea TastyReuben, do you skip lunch or dinner?
Yes…sort of. The funny thing is, whenever I’m plating everything up, I have to have a sample of this and that, to make sure it’s ok, and then the crust trimmings are a delicious little treat for the tea boss (me!), so while I was getting that together, I’d had a piece of fudge, a macaron, a scone (just plain) and trimmings from six sandwiches - I was nearly full before we started!

Sit-down time was 2PM, we had a starting cocktail (Prosecco & Chambord) and it went on until about 4:30PM, so we didn’t eat anything after that, except for our usual nightly tea-and-treat break, which was coffee-and-treat last night.

Didn’t have time to photograph Mr SSOAP’s lunch pail as this morning was a bit rushed but I stopped to take a photo of the cucumber sandwiches because the electric knife is a delight to use for afternoon tea.
It’s really the only thing I use it for but didn’t throw it out in the latest cull because it does such a good job on sandwiches 😂

I make cucumber sandwiches for travelling fractionally differently to cucumber sandwiches for afternoon tea.
You still whip the butter before buttering so you know you’ve got a good even coating without crushing the bread (not crushing the bread is a main aim) but I slice the cucumber differently, removing the seeds then drying off any wetness and slicing the cucumber into long strips, this way they can stay at their optimum for hours 😋

Did you tell MG about the mayo between the cukes??? 😄

Those look pretty darn good SSOAP! I'll have to try that now that I've a loaf of white bread in the house. That's a rare thing here.

Just butter or is there a whit of cream cheese in there?
Just butter.
If any cream cheese went in they would no longer be considered cucumber sandwiches, they’d be cream cheese and cucumber. Which I love a lot but that’s a different thing, it’s only supposed to taste of butter (beaten until light and easily spreadable) and thin slices of cucumber with the seeds left in.

Spot on.

As the saying goes: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" 😍

Well…we’ve been known to have afternoon tea here at home, and out at a (British-owned) tea cafe we like, and when we’re in England, we have afternoon tea every day our schedule permits…so we like our afternoon tea.

Favorites - for sandwiches, MrsT’s hands-down must-have is egg mayonnaise, followed by cucumber and cream cheese. Mine are probably egg mayonnaise, followed by cheese and pickle.

One thing we both agree on is… no 🤬 <bleeping> !@#$%* salmon! Take that 💩 right back to the stream it swam upstream from and throw it back and pee in the stream while you’re at it! No!

Scones - we just get whatever scones it comes with when we’re out, but at home, I’ll make a variety…and yes, surprise surprise…US scones do differ a good bit from UK scones (triangular, more sweet, more crumbly, frequently come with some sort of glaze/icing) - I’m partial to a maple-oat scone when we’re having AT at home. Accoutrements depending on the scone, of course.

The top tier is the one I struggle with the most, because it is just so customizable. I always try to work within the limits of cake, chocolate, confection…and it’s always the confection that gives me the most difficulty, since I’m not really a candy maker.

Many times, for the top tier, I’ll make a simple unfrosted cake, like an apple cake, then I’ll see if we have any cookies with jam in them, for something jammy (or I’ll make some easy jam tarts with supermarket pie dough), and then either make some easy fudge of some sort, or buy something like that.

There are a couple of pics in this topic:

I have others sprinkled throughout the site.
