I use to own several table clothes with matching napkins. Some were handmade by my great grandmother and grandmother.
I have a padding layer as well. I've whittled my collection down.
Our dining table is old and made of pine, so it will get dinged up. So when I have the Neighborhood Gal Pals over of game afternoon gatherings, I put down the padding and a table cloth to protect the table.
For everyday use for just DH & I, it's cloth placemats.

I was never a fan of table clothes until I met my wife who always has one on the table. She buys the disposable plastic type so she can interchange them for each holiday - easter, halloween, christmas and so forth. Cheap and nasty BUT practicle :)
