baking powder and baking soda

Some of the recipes that I use call for both. And some only call for one of the 2. Like German Chocolate cake, which calls for Baking soda & buttermilk.

Yes, it's correct.

Baking powder is sodium bicarbonate and cream of tartar combined. Just needs a liquid adding to activate to assist rising.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate alone. Needs an acid and liquid in order to assist with rising. It is often added to Irish soda bread which contains buttermilk (which is the acid).
