From memory my basil was genovese?? Basil. I grow in plant trays. Wife plants out at different stages. That gives us basil for months.

I scrolled through multiple images of basil and I think what I've got taking over the kitchen garden is called African blue basil. As you can see in
the first picture, the top leaves are purplish, but there are green leaves beneath. The flower stem corresponds with Thai basil, but the leaves are much larger. Additionally, the top leaves are not completely purple, but variegated. Flavour wise, it's extremely aromatic, heavy on the anise, a touch of licorice, maybe, and slightly sweet. Makes glorious pesto!

My basil is looking really good so far this season. As a weird OCD habit, I pick off the flower things when they do grow, I like the feel of it pulling off, plus my hand smells good. So I guess I never have to worry about it going bitter.

Bad quote. Sorry. But woah! That’s expensive! Neighbour struggled from seed. My pots are okay. It’s only a pound for a new one, so we just keep it in a mug on the window sill for a few weeks. Tomatoes aren’t taking from seed, but plants are doing okay for now. Weather is too changeable for fruit for the past couple of years over hear.

My bro, who lived in Maidstone, was a fantastic gardener. He could get anything to grow.
Except basil.
My DIL, when they lived in Cinci,told me I had to save her basil plant.
I just saved a lot of stress and bought her a new one.

It looks exactly like mine
The purple is caused by antocyanin formation which happens under the influence of light. So it is not always there.
Your taste description also sounds the same as what I got

Expensive maybe but cheaper than buying it dry. I use what little room I've got inside for the start from seed veggie plants.

Just to make life more fun, I've looked up my basil and apparently I have mint basil. I think I may be digging it out of the veg plot soon!
The stem certainly looks like a mint stem, doesn't it?
