• I’ve added a casual chat room to CookingBites as a place for off-topic banter, light conversation, and short-lived chit-chat that doesn’t belong in forum threads. The chat room is informal and lightly-to-not moderated, with messages being temporary, so it’s ideal for friendly back-and-forth that would otherwise derail discussions. Site rules still apply, but there’s no reporting system or expectation of post-by-post moderation - if something becomes uncomfortable, the right response is to step away. If a topic has substance or lasting value, it still belongs in the forums; everything else can head to chat.

Burns night (25th January)

Anyone for haggis? I love it and it is possible to get vegetarian versions which are quite good.

Will you be celebrating?
Forgot about Burns night! Funny you should mention it, as I have from-scratch haggis ingredients waiting to be used from the freezer. Haggis is on my to-do list while it's still winter. I need a haggis work flow 😅
Had I been more diligent I'd have had one ready for tonight but not to be.

There is time. Tomorrow my quick cook haggis arrives so I will have haggis, neeps and tatties for Burns night dinner tomorrow.

I had to look up Burns Night, as well as haggis. I've heard of the latter, but was never quite sure what it was.

Wikipedia says; "Haggis (Scottish Gaelic: taigeis [ˈtʰakʲɪʃ]) is a savoury pudding containing sheep's pluck (heart, liver, and lungs), minced with chopped onion, oatmeal, suet, seasonings, and salt, mixed with stock, and cooked while traditionally encased in the animal's stomach..."

Having Pennsylvania-Dutch roots, I've had stuffed pig stomach, and I've made beef and venison heart and liver on rare occasion, but sheep's lungs might be a bridge too far. A couple of dirty martinis might convince me to try haggis, but that's probably once instance where I'd opt for the alternate vegetarian option, and "vegetarian" is normally not a word in my lexicon. 🤣

There is a photo here: Haggis and other Scottish Foods

At the end of the day its like a very pungent flavoursome sausage.
I'm conflicted. On one hand, that looks a lot like ground beef. On the other, it looks like something that should have an autopsy report. But I do like pungent flavors... so one vodka martini and I'm in. 😉

Funny thing is that I was vegetarian for many years and still eat mainly vegetarian food, but I love really strong tasting meat: game,
black pudding, haggis.
