Something SandwichShortOfAPicnic said made me think of our cutlery sets over the years.

We used to have cheap ones that hung up, bought from a supermarket and added to slowly, as we lost them... it was all very chaotic and uncoordinated. The house we moved to didn't have any drawers and everything had to hang up. At some point, we revamped the kitchen (despite being tenants), and suddenly we had a cutlery drawer. I don't even know why I bought this set, but it was really great to have decent cutlery instead of tired of plastic stuff that was fading and chipping....

I bought a Stellar Robinson cutlery set in matt, which has been discontinued sadly. Stellar Rochester Matt 44 Piece Cutlery Gift Box Set

My parents loved ours so much that they also bought a set and because we don't use soup spoons and they don't use dessert spoons, we traded. We also bought extra teaspoons because we use so many....

This is their shop and Rochester range now. Not expensive by any means, but do much nicer to hold than the supermarket cutlery we used to have.

So, do you have cheap or expensive cutlery? Let's see it. (I'll post mine in daylight tomorrow if others participate ;) )

Nice, I like the range of different pieces available 👍

My main use cutlery is very pleasing, very solid and a pleasure to use. I bought it from Habitat in Guildford when I was 21 years old (over 30 years ago) and at the time it wiped my meagre savings out. I don’t regret that one bit, it’s still going strong.

Since Habitat went down the tubes and the name was bought by Argos they discontinued a lot of stuff and reduced the quality (and price) of a lot of their offerings which was disappointing.
Tbh I’ve never picked up cutlery as solid or weighty as the Habitat stuff I bought. Fortunately a decade later after I bought that first set and before they went kaput I had the cash to by a second set, so had twelve of everything.

The loss of one of two of each causes me to occasionally turn into a cutlery counting lunatic, if anything is missing everyone is dispatched to check their rooms, study, office to see if they have them 😂

As I type this the doorbell rang and the new cutlery is here :hyper:
I’ll report back later, I have some unboxing to do! 👋

We've got two sets of cutlery, plus a few odds and ends my ferret wife aquired from somewhere on another.
Daily use is stainless steel, solid, and has lasted 44 years so far - with a few inexplicable losses.
The flash cutlery is another thing, only to be used on high days and holidays. Where it came from, I've got no idea, but it's very elegant.
Edit: just had a look - it's Japanese stainless steel

We have two sets, stainless steel, both purchased from local department stores, they’re neither expensive nor cheap, just somewhere in the middle, which is perfect for us for everyday use. We don’t own “nice” silverware, the stuff that gets passed down from generation to generation, nor do we want any.

While I don’t like that really plain, thin, sort of dark grey stuff that you’ll find in cafeterias, I also don’t like how heavy some of the stuff at fine dining restaurants can be. I’m a fairly nimble eater with my utensils, and that super-heavy stuff slows me down, and usually feels like I’m trying to negotiate the plate with a baseball/cricket bat in one hand, and a pitchfork in the other!

I now have weak thumbs and my grips not great but I can’t say I’ve ever felt cutlery was too heavy or slowed me down, but I’m a slow eater so have never had the need for speed eating cutlery 😂

The new stuff-

It’s prettier IRL but it was icy cold when it arrived so there’s condensation all over it in this pic, heyho 😂

My sons have one knife fork and spoon each that’s good and the rest is cheap Ikea stuff.
Unfortunately I passed my dislike of bad cutlery onto my sons, I guess there are worse things you can pass on 😬
So I’ve had to pay the price of handing down that foible in listening to them complain about their bad cutlery, hoist by my own petard! 🙄

So this Christmas I bought them a joint prezzie. It’s not the finest in the world but I’ve always loved this old English pattern and fortunately it turns out they love it too 😊

We have an everyday set and a more expensive set for special occasions. Except, given my current circumstances we now use all our "special occasion" stuff everyday, because everyday is a special occasion and we want to enjoy our best posessions.
I would say to everyone, don't limit the times you enjoy the stuff you like the most. If you've got it then use it.

We now use all of our cutlery and fine china daily, we don't save anything for special occasion anymore.
My husband doesn’t like the fancy cutlery we got about 10 years, he said they are too heavy for him, even though the set looks beautiful.
I just grab whatever available.

I had a bit of a struggle with this for years, until I finally sat down and looked at different cutlery (there is a LOT). I like spoons for some reason and I was never happy with the ones I had, so I finally got some really good ones, not expensive, just, comfortable, that have a bit of weight to them and can actually hold more than 2 drops of soup in them. I use those spoons for everything now and they seem to be a perfect fit, especially soup.

Beautiful! Elegant, modern; now you've got to cook something special to baptise it!
Why thankyou KKD!
I will won’t I!
But it will be fully celebratory as it’s going in my Isle of Man ‘bottom drawer’ so the first time it gets used will be an big event in itself 😊

Interesting thought though, what should the first meal in a new place be?

Non-disguised trotters! 😁
