Crate Training Your Dog

I think I took crate to literally.
I thought of an open crate, like the ones veges are transported in.
Couldn't figure out the real difference between a crate and a dog basket.
My dogs use their baskets, the floor, the coach, my lap, my bed, their wet blankets in the heat and basically every other place available
Well they can get out of their baskets. The crates are like cages with doors. You can leave the door open or shut it to keep them contained.

The word cage was changed to crate when referring to dogs to try and soften the horror of the idea of imprisoning your dog.
But if the doors open (or taken off) and they go in n out voluntarily it totally changes the perspective and it’s a den not a prison.

Old dogs can still easily be trained so long as all the steps are broken down into the tiniest steps.
My old girl is 12 years and it took only a few hours for her to voluntarily get into the rucksack we’re training her to get in to go on the motorbike. It’s currently on the floor in the kitchen and she frequently goes in it (looking for treats) and that is one old dog!

My first Bichon I took agility training when she was 5yrs. I was not made to welcome one bit, I was nervous anyway and was being seriously sneered at because I was not there with a collie or german shepherd and I was wearing the wrong clothes with a girly dog but they underestimate the power of a good bond and breaking things into tiny steps.

She went through the tunnel, weaved her way round the cones, through the poles, up and down the ramp went over two jumps perfectly and their jaws dropped. She was really good at it.
Me and my “silly little dog” 😠 got to the end of the session when they suddenly became far more friendly.
I turned my nose up at them and left. I don’t like rude people.
Sorry went down memory lane and lost my point.. urr oh yeah most old dogs can be trained so long as you can interest them. Whether thats a treat or a desire to please you or for fun.

Edit : I did then buy the agility stuff (hoops, tunnel, see saw, cones, poles and jumps) and set them up at home. She absolutely loved it!

When I was growing up we had a labrador, he has his corner of the room, a cover on the floor, that was his personal area, never used a crate. Reading these replies have altered my mindset.

Great idea, how easy are they to clean?
I washed the whole thing in the machine many times and they stayed new looking 👍
The pad in the bottom they didn't like and would dig them out so I put vetbed in the bottom.

If you look at the back wall you'll see pen panels against the wall. I had a hook screwed into the wall next to the radiator and another on an adjacent wall so I could section a bit off.

This was handy at busy cooking times like Birthdays, Easter or Christmas because I had 5 and they have a habit of standing in front of you to get your attention which isn't safe when you're working at speed. I always removed the pen once the food was on the table but for two or three hours it was good to know I wasn't going to tip a hot pan of something on one of them.
