Someone on the forum recently mentioned vacation and “day drinking” - drinking alcohol during the daytime hours, especially during the workweek, as opposed to the perceived “norm” of reserving that activity for the evening hours and later.

That reminded me of one of those toss-away articles I’d read a while back, from Condé Nast or some other group like that, with a title like “10 Things US Tourists Do That Confuse Europeans,” and it touched on day drinking…or rather not day drinking.

The gist was, right or wrong, that Europeans have no issue with a glass or two of wine a lunch, maybe some sort of aperitif in the late afternoon, and then drinking socially on into the evening, where US tourists seem to hold back drinking during the day, then furiously play catch-up starting at 5PM or thereabouts, and proceed to get completely pie-eyed by 9PM, while the genteel Europeans who have paced themselves all through the day sit back and tut-tut the poor inebriated Americans for not being able to handle their drink.

The article itself, no doubt, just a piece of fluff. It did, however, get me ruminating on this concept of day drinking, especially during the workweek.

Any US employer I’ve ever worked for has had strict rules about alcohol consumption during work hours - don’t do it unless it’s a pre-approved special circumstance, and those were few and far between. I’m sure this is a result of our lingering Puritanism.

Even when I was in the military, having a beer at lunch, in uniform was a no-no…until I was stationed in the UK, then we had permission to have a single beer/glass of wine at lunch, so as not to offend our host nation, where a lunchtime beer or glass of wine wasn’t unusual. Yes, it was actual written-down policy.

Now, with so many of us working from home, out from under the watchful eyes of strict bosses and tattletale coworkers, I wonder how many folks here in the US are having a morning mimosa…a lunchtime libation…an afternoon aperitif?

Anyway, I don’t really have a specific question for the group, just more of a “share your opinions/thoughts about day drinking, please.”

My grandfathers both had a drink or two with lunch during the work day - one had the "businessman" lunch complete with martini's while the other chased his salami and cheese with a beer or two (this was circa the 1960s). The first time I met one of my bosses, he came to the job site and took the team to lunch and actually said we could order alcoholic drinks if we wanted. That was a first for me.

Personally, I find it not a good idea for "me" to day drink during work hours. Let's just say, I am not so good at biting my tongue when not drinking - drinking removes all my inhibitions of speaking freely....LOL

As far as day drinking on personal time, its usually one or the other. Either a few drinks during the afternoon or evening. If I have a couple during the day, I am usually napping or had my fill by the time evening rolls around. I think age has something to do with it...back in the day, I could start with brunch and go into the late evening. Sometimes, I miss those days :)

True believer in, "to each their own / whatever you can handle".

When my dad retired from the air force and started selling real estate, it was common to have cocktails at lunch with prospective buyers and there was booze in the office. I like watching Law and Order and seeing the prosecuting attorney going for the scotch after winning, and sometimes after losing, g a case. There was a show called Mad Men about advertising executives I saw a few times years ago and I think they had pretty expansive liquor selections in the executive offices. I've also heard reference to a "2 martini lunch" but not sure where I heard it.

I just think it's not uncommon, or at least in previous decades, for American businessmen to be schnockered well before 5 o clock.

Realized after all that blabbering, I didn’t include my own habits.

MrsT and I generally don’t drink Monday-Thursday, unless it’s something unusual, like some kind of celebration, vacation, etc.

Weekends, though, depending on what’s going on, we can start with mimosas with breakfast and keep right on until bedtime. We’ll occasionally go to a monthly German sausage buffet (I’ve mentioned that before), and the bar opens at 10AM, and when we go, we’ll be there in line at 9:45AM to get our first half-liter.

Vacation, we’ll also drink all day long, but paced so neither one of us is blotto - mimosa at breakfast, some other brunch drink after that, a beer at lunch, an afternoon drink or two, cocktails at 5PM, wine with supper, and a nightcap. All day long, but spaced apart so I don’t fall off the cruise ship or down the mountainside.

I’ll also add, when I was stationed at one of the RAF bases back in the ‘90’s, we did have “team meetings” every Friday starting at 3PM - we put up the “Classified” sign on the door (signaling we were working with classified information), locked the door, and broke out the beer.

Our NCOIC cleared it with his boss, and he’d occasionally come down for a drink as well. He once gave us the crude but welcome compliment that

“I love this office. It’s the only place in the building I can have a beer and talk about p***y.”

Meow!

I'll rarely, but it happens, toss back a vodka if I'm busy in the kitchen and usually after 3 PM. I'll have another something after dinner and a nightcap the last half hour of whatever I'm watching. As I get older I just don't feel the need to spend the money or deal with the side affects of alcohol.

I follow René Descartes principles.
I drink, therefore I am.
I'm also a great believer in Alan Jackson's recommendation that it's always 5 o'clock somewhere:happy:
No hang ups about it and, partly because of what I do, I get offered drinks at all sorts of wierd times of the day. Sometimes I'll start at 6am and work through till 2pm, at an event, after which a beer or two is fine, because I won't be doing anything else the rest of the day. Sometimes, the event is from 2 - 10pm, and I definitely avoid turning up somewhere three sheets in the wind.
The liquid lunch of corporate times does seem to have disappeared, however. I can remember working in a petroleum company where all the marketing/sales staff went out for Friday "lunch" and it was down to me to drive the sales director home at about 3.30 because he was totally legless. During my time in HR, I used to dread going for "lunch" with the union leaders, because those guys had hollow legs and it was almost impossible to excuse onesself before 6pm.
Everything in moderation. Cheers!

I rarely drink after dinner any more. I literally don't like it. I will sometimes drink mid afternoon on my day off to dinner time if I am working around the house. Usually just nursing a beer, so about one an hour until dinner, then maybe switch to wine depending on what we are having. Not much of a social life so we don't go out and drink. My family doesn't drink much so there isn't much drinking when we get together. When I play out, I never drink. Makes me too tired and I have to drive home.

But, when I do, I'm all for day drinking. I can get a quick glow and be done the party around 7 pm. That's usually a one person party because my wife doesn't drink. I'll have a few hours to wear it off and when I wake there is no hangover.
